Academic Advisor/Principle Designated School Official (PDSO)/Veteran Representative

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:

Reports to the Dean of Student Services and is responsible for implementing the mission and goals of the student services and academic advising program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide academic advising to new and prospective students with or without an academic major; explain policies, procedures, and program requirements; and assist students in selecting educational and career goals. Documents student contacts.
  2. Consult with students regarding academic problems or concerns and assist students in obtaining support to meet these specific needs.
  3. Review, interpret, and evaluate applicant test scores and other information to determine eligibility status.
  4. Provide current information to students on university/college articulation issues.
  5. Function as a collector, disseminator, and interpreter of educational and career materials.
  6. Participate in student-related research and evaluation of effectiveness of academic advising services.
  7. Serve on institutional committees related to the welfare of students, as requested by the supervisor.
  8. Assist the admissions staff in outreach activities and high school programs.
  9. Serve as a trained Title IX confidential resource for the College.
  10. Responsible for services as the liaison and main point of contact between the College and relevant branches of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including United States immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
  11. Responsible for maintaining and updating form I-17 Petition of Approval for School to Enroll Nonimmigrant Students for the College.
  12. Responsible for filing the College’s I-17 recertification package.
  13. Performs all duties of a designated school official (DSO).
  14. Provide direct assistance to veteran students in the form of academic advising and educational planning for eligible certificate and associate degree programs.
  15. Work in conjunction with the Coordinator of Veteran Services to meet the needs of student veterans.
  16. Utilize retention based resources and best practices to assist with assigned student persistence and retention.
  17. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  5. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.
  6. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
  7. Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.

PERSONAL INTERACTION:

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

No supervision required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in education or related field with three years experience in an educational setting; computer skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills required. Master’s degree in counseling, education, or related field; community college experience and knowledge of Banner software strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is an LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor). Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy.

This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems.
