TITLE:Academic Support Coordinator/Advisor

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:
The Academic Support Coordinator is responsible for organizing and sustaining academic support services for Student Support Services program participants. Primary duties include identifying academic coaches, facilitating preliminary training, and conducting frequent guidance for coaches. The Academic Support Coordinator is also a designated advisor for program participants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, organize, evaluate, and coordinate comprehensive tutoring and academic coaching services.
- Actively recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate a pool of student tutors.
- Serve as supervisor of the TRIO Tutoring Assistant position.
- Collaborate with Student Support Services staff regarding shared tutorial component.
- Support director in efforts to work collaboratively with faculty and area facilitators to ensure effectiveness of academic coaching services.
- Manage online tutorial database including dissemination of information to program participants.
- Personally contact and assess program participants tutoring/coaching needs, learning styles, and provide best practice guidelines.
- Conduct needs assessments and develop an individualized academic educational plan (IAEP) for each assigned student enabling smooth graduation or transition to a four-year institution.
- Remain current with appropriate tutoring and academic coaching theories, practices, and research. Including engagement in professional development.
- Provide individual and group advisement services including: academic advising, transfer planning, financial literacy education, academic skills and study strategies, career exploration, and personal support. Maintain records of student contacts.
- Monitor academic and graduation progress, provide needs assessments, and implement proactive intervention strategies.
- Plan and implement cultural and educational activities and educational opportunities for participants. This may include some evening and weekend hours in which limited travel may be necessary.
- Track and report service delivery efforts and outcomes on weekly basis to supervisor.
- Complete written reports as assigned and requested for reporting to the U.S. Department of Education and the College on a monthly, semester, and yearly basis.
- Collect, verify, and input accurate data into appropriate database systems on a daily basis.
- Participate in campus initiatives that support the program mission and goals, as well as creating and conducting presentations to market the program to diverse populations within the College.
- Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
- Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
- Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
- Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
- Must be able to work in a team environment.
- Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to faculty, staff, and students.
- Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to drive College 14 passenger van.
Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.
Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over TRIO Tutoring Assistant and designated work-study students.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field. One or two years experience with academic, transfer, career, or personal counseling, preferably in community colleges. Experience with career development and exploration with college/adults knowledge of study techniques and student learning. Experience in working with low-income and/or first generation college students, and/or students with disabilities; empathy towards the problems of under-represented groups. Preferred: Background similar to that of the Student Support Services Program Participants.
TORT LIABILITY STATEMENT:
Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems. May serve as a member of a committee that supports the health, safety and/or legal rights of visitors, students and staff.
