Director of the SVCC Police Academy

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:

Serves as the Director of the SVCC Police Academy and is responsible for leadership, management, and strategic direction of the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide leadership, management, and strategic direction for the SVCC Police Academy program, services, and activities.
  2. Develop and implement a long-range strategy to achieve the organizational mission of the SVCC Police Academy and implement operating procedures and policies in accordance with SVCC policies.
  3. Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with SVCC requirements, and State and Federal regulations.
  4. Manage, develop, and administer the SVCC Policy Academy annual budget; direct the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor/approve expenditures.
  5. Prepare quarterly and annual programmatic and fiscal reports for SVCC Policy Academy.
  6. Train and hire instructors; work with contractual workers and employees to develop skills and abilities; evaluate employees on an annual basis.
  7. Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for the SVCC Policy Academy; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products.
  8. Build relationships with stakeholders in the criminal justice community; participate in marketing the SVCC Policy Academy to promote activities, programs, and goals for recruitment and retention efforts.
  9. Attend professional conferences, designated law enforcement court and/or correction agency training, advisory committees, and regional and State meetings to stay current on public safety issues and curriculum.
  10. Oversee the maintenance of SVCC Police Academy facilities and resources in collaboration with SVCC Facilities division to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, Local and Community Colleges safety requirements.
  11. Serve as a member of the administrative team, including service on the Leadership Council.
  12. Serve as night administrator on a rotating basis. (3%*)
  13. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  4. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations.
  5. Must be able to work with computers and related technology.
  6. Must be able to work non-standard hours.

PERSONAL INTERACTION:

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, the public, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over designed personnel.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in a professional related field and a minimum of five years of experience in the criminal justice system (police, prosecution, courts, or corrections); education and experience to assure proficiency in, but not limited to:  supervision, curriculum design, instructional methodology, testing and evaluations, and educational psychology is required  Must be approved for one or more areas of instruction in the Academy curriculum by the Illinois Local Governmental Law Enforcement Officers Training Board and must continue to maintain the professional standards established by the Training Board. The position requires extensive background and leadership experience in law enforcement or the criminal justice field. *Indicates tort percentages.

TORT LIABILITY STATEMENT:

Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems. May serve as a member of a committee that supports the health, safety and/or legal rights of visitors, students and staff.
