Academic Advisor and Career Specialist

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:

Reports to the Dean of Student Services and is responsible for implementing the mission and goals of the student services division and academic advising program specializing in career advising/resources.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide academic advising to new and prospective students with or without an academic major; explain policies, procedures, and program requirements and assist students in selecting educational and career goals. Documents student contacts.
  2. Consult with students regarding academic problems or concerns and assist students in obtaining support, both on and off campus, to meet these specific needs.
  3. Review, interpret, and evaluate applicant test scores and other information for course and program eligibility.
  4. Serve as the point person for SVCC career program updates and information.
  5. Provide current information to students on university/college articulation issues.
  6. Function as a collector, disseminator and interpreter of educational and career materials.
  7. Coordinate and deliver career exploration services designed to assist students with making well-informed career related choices.
  8. Use professional experiences and resources, career exploration inventories and related software to assist students with career choices.
  9. Provide career advising services utilizing a variety of career exploration tools, related instruments, and professional resources as a means of promoting student success and retention.
  10. Develop and present career exploration programming for undecided students and targeted academic populations.
  11. Participate in student-related research and evaluations of effectiveness of academic advising services and career software.
  12. Serve on institutional committees related to the welfare of students, as requested by the supervisor.
  13. Assist the admissions staff in outreach activities and high school programs.
  14. Serve as a trained Title IX confidential resource for the College.
  15. Utilize retention based resources and best practices to assist with assigned student persistence and retention.
  16. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  5. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.
  6. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
  7. Must be able work evenings and weekends as required.

PERSONAL INTERACTION:

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

No supervision required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in education or related field with three years experience in an educational setting or equivalent education and experience; computer skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills required. Master’s degree in counseling, education, or related field; community college experience and knowledge of Banner software strongly preferred. Experience in career services beyond coursework internship or practicum experience preferred.

TORT LIABILITY STATEMENT:

Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems. May serve as a member of a committee that supports the health, safety and/or legal rights of visitors, students and staff.
