Adult Education Instructor

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:

To be cognizant of the philosophy and objectives of adult education and of the college, and to use them as guidelines in planning, structuring, and teaching courses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Be knowledgeable of the philosophy and objectives of the College and adult education, and use them as guidelines in planning, structuring, and teaching each course.
  2. Maintain scheduled class hours and maximize instructional potential of every class.
  3. Use a variety of instructional approaches in every class in order to accommodate different learning styles and levels of functioning.
  4. Use instructional technology when appropriate and available.
  5. Use a variety of strategies and approaches aimed at retaining students and improving their class attendance.
  6. Engage in activities aimed at retaining students.
  7. Maintain an awareness of community services and make appropriate student referrals.
  8. Conduct an intake interview with each student and complete student intake procedures and required documentation.
  9. Develop and implement an individual Educational and Employability Plan (EEP) for off campus students enrolled in the instructor’s class site.
  10. Provide assistance and guidance to students to help them understand and maximize their learning, personal and social development.
  11. Promote student transitioning to job training, job placement and future education.
  12. Conduct periodic student learning assessments using approved assessment instruments in accordance with department and regulatory guidelines.
  13. Participate in department efforts aimed at improving programs and services.
  14. Maintain current knowledge of the field of adult education.
  15. Communicate and coordinate with partnering agencies in collaboration with the supervisor.
  16. Maintain student files and records in accordance with department and grant requirements, and submit them regularly and/or by request to the supervisor.
  17. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively by email and phone on a daily basis.
  4. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to students, employees, and the general public.
  5. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.

PERSONAL INTERACTION:

Frequent contact is made with students, volunteers, and general public in the routine performance of duties and in providing routine departmental services and duties.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

No supervision required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree is required. Experience teaching adults, knowledge of adult education and a degree in education are preferred.

TORT LIABILITY STATEMENT:

Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems. May serve as a member of a committee that supports the health, safety and/or legal rights of visitors, students and staff. Such committees may include the AA/EEO, Sexual Harassment, and Safety/Loss Control committees. (Risk Management Categories I, III, IV. See Tort file.)
