Program Director of Adult Education

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:

Responsible for leadership, supervision, management and development of Adult Education programs. Design, create, and support academic services for underprepared learners. Provide guidance in the areas of instructional services to instructional staff and supplementary services to students to maximize their learning, personal, and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain the college and adult education mission when planning, structuring, and teaching.
  2. Maintain current knowledge in the field of adult education and literacy.
  3. Provide leadership in marketing efforts to increase the number of students and tutors in the Adult Education and VITAL programs.
  4. Provide exit interview services for Adult Education and VITAL students to orient them to College programs and admissions procedures.
  5. Create, develop and implement direct curriculum and course opportunities which support underprepared students.
  6. Monitor student growth in the Adult Education (ESL, citizenship, ABE, and ASE) and VITAL programs.
  7. Responsible for student individual educational and employability plans and managing student learning binders (portfolios).
  8. Provide leadership for compliance with WIOA guidelines and requirements with respect to adult education programming.
  9. Ensure timely and accurate submission of required grant application and reports.
  10. Prepare and submit to supervisor annual report summarizing accomplishments of the departments for the previous year.
  11. Recruit and train volunteer tutors to service underprepared VITAL participants.
  12. Monitor online tutor registration, coordinate tutor training sessions, manage online tutor training (Canvas), award certificate upon completion of training hours, and manage professional development hours for volunteer tutors.
  13. Monitor procedures and processes for data collection and reporting systems.
  14. Train Adult Education instructors in the use of reporting software in the areas of assessment, data analysis, and systems to evaluate effective instruction aligned to student goal attainment (goals outlined in the Adult Education and Family Literacy State and Federal grants).
  15. Responsible for records necessary to complete and submit reports in accordance with governmental grant requirements.
  16. Create, develop and provide transitional opportunities in the areas of college and career readiness for adult learners.
  17. Assume leadership responsibility to administer, write, and manage grant activities in accordance with the VITAL and the adult education grant requirements.
  18. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively by email and phone on a daily basis.
  4. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to students, employees and the general public.
  5. Be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
  6. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  7. Must be able to interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  8. Must be able to travel to various sites throughout the district and attend state-wide meetings.

PERSONAL INTERACTION:

Contact is made as appropriate with all levels of College personnel, students, vendors and suppliers in relation to departmental services and duties.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over Adult Education Instructors, Adult Education Tutors, VITAL Administrative Assistant, and the Adult Education Administrative Assistant.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Education and two to five years of successful experience in Adult Education or equivalent education and experience required. Good instructional skills (curriculum design experience preferred), ability to advise adult education students, ability to network with employers and social service agencies, ability to recruit students and advertise programs, knowledge of Illinois adult education curriculum and administrative system. Bi-lingual and grant writing experience preferred.
