Faculty Coordinator of English Language Arts

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:

The Faculty Coordinator of English Language Arts will develop and revise the developmental program for English Language Arts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Teach all levels of ELA classes.
  2. Organize and hold ELA instructor orientation at the beginning of each semester.
  3. Coordinate the lab portion of ELA 095 and ELA 099 as well as ELA 090.
  4. Monitor every students’ progress through the ELA sequence and keep appropriate records to facilitate the self-paced approach approved for implementation in the fall.
  5. Provide faculty development in best practices for assisting developmental students in college-level classes.
  6. Maintain communication and collaborate with other College departments to facilitate student retention and growth at the College.
  7. Coordinate developmental course offerings every semester.
  8. Prepare and submit to supervisor an annual report summarizing the accomplishments of the ELA program for the previous year.
  9. With the developmental math coordinator, represent the College in local and state organizations and meetings regarding developmental education.
  10. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  3. Must be able to provide and understand verbal/visual orders from supervisor and to subordinates.
  4. Must possess excellent computer skills.
  5. Must be able to work with the general public, employees, and students.

PERSONAL INTERACTION:

Frequent and personal contact is made with all levels of college personnel, faculty, students, the general public, and outside organizations in relation to specific departmental duties and services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

No supervision required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s degree in post-secondary literacy or 18 graduate hours in developmental reading and writing. Pedagogical proclivity to work with developmental students, including a willingness to provide intrusive, individualized instruction. Experience in teaching and working with developmental students in a community college environment.

Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems. May serve as a member of a committee that supports the health, safety and/or legal rights of visitors, students and staff.
